A CLEAR answer to why natural hair maintenance is so confusing & how to gain clarity

A CLEAR answer to why natural hair maintenance is so confusing & how to gain clarity

It is made to be confusing, simply.

Natural hair is very simple because it is just that, hair. Hair doesn’t require much, honestly. Therefore, I will give you solutions to 3 common struggles I have noticed most women have with their natural hair as a natural hairstylist. Best of all, it will only take a 5-minute read to connect to the easiest clarification about natural hair ever! Here we go, first up is products.

Products

Let’s talk about products, one of the most common questions I get is: What should I use on my hair? I always decline answering this question online because it truly depends. It depends on your hair condition & composition essentially. Condition meaning the state of your hair health. Is your hair dehydrated, breaking, thriving, etc.? Your hair condition will be answered on the product label. Products will always describe what they offer. Dehydrated? Hydration products. Breaking? Trick question (I can explain in another post) but protein rich or moisturizing products. Thriving? A maintenance product.

To go even deeper, composition consists of 3 things: density, texture & porosity. If you have low density fine hair you will have to treat & manage your hair in a completely different manner than someone with high density coarse hair. Most importantly touching on porosity however because it is the process of the hair absorbing water and product. If you do not know your porosity level the struggle of maintaining moisture or strength will be never ending.

Find the right products for you by taking your hair condition & composition into consideration. More importantly, remember to visit a hair care professional who can provide you with their expertise in this area.

Information

One of the main issues that come into play with the confusion of straight forward clarity in maintaining natural hair is information. With the many sources you can inquire about, who can you trust? The answer is professionals without self focused motives. A genuine hair care professional is always the recommendation. They will be able to provide reliable information based off real world experience, education & expertise.

Having direct access to a pro can help close the bridge on years of confusion in a moment's time. Beauty pros are required to go through extensive education including disorders, disease, product knowledge, biology & more! No shade to the kitchen stylists but consider the providers who have experience & are knowledgeable for the MOST reliable of information.

Save confusion by steering away from random advice from influencers, advertisers, apps, etc. Resting your hat on unreliable information can be enough to set you back months to years on your journey. Some information can be accurate in these areas however this route makes education absolutely complicated. Let’s keep things simple, beauty.

Styles

Now let’s hit the big one, styling. Oftentimes the question of the best hairstyles arise for natural hair & the best advice is honestly to keep things reasonable. There can be times where everyday wear is not prioritized over aesthetic, which is important. When choosing a style it is best to meet these requirements: easy access for maintenance, low tension/manipulation & protective.

Easy access for maintenance is one element that is easily disregarded. One of the most important factors of hair maintenance is maintaining moisture levels. So, if the hair cannot be reached to moisturize, it is not a good style for natural hair. If the style cannot be shampooed, especially beyond a couple of weeks, it is not a good style for natural hair. If there is no room to maintain the style, it's no good.

Low tension & low manipulation are great factors to consider especially in avoiding stress on the hair & scalp. If a styles tension is too high it can lead to a dreaded form of hair loss called traction alopecia. When this occurs the hair loss can cause irreversible damage. Low manipulation helps to avoid any mechanical damage. Mechanical damage is where breakage commonly occurs due to mishandling, overhandling, etc. Ultimately, this gentle care is the best form of hair care for natural hair.

In conclusion, hair care is quite simple as long as we apply certain principles consistently. Taking proper products, accurate information & gentle styling are great principles to put forth for understanding how to achieve a successful natural hair journey!
